Advocates Share Legislative Updates from Across the Nation

As the month of June comes to an end, yet another round of state legislatures will bang the closing gavel on this year’s session. Across the Network, advocates have faced a variety of both opportunities and challenges in 2018. Catch up on the latest state policy wins and more with the following member updates.

After the Colorado legislature adjourned on May 9, Colorado Succeeds shared details on “notable education victories that will create more opportunities for students to be college- and career-ready and provide more support for struggling districts and schools, among other positive changes.” Click here to learn more about opportunities for more students to earn industry credentials, expanded advanced coursework options, equitable funding for public charter schools, and more.

ConnCAN described 2018 as a “year of progress,” including on SB 455, a unanimously passed bill that will pinpoint and remove long-standing barriers to teacher certification for excellent candidates of color. Read more here.

In their most recent state legislation update, the Data Quality Campaign (DQC) noted that state legislators were considering more than 238 bills related to how states collect, use, protect, and share education data in service of student learning. According to DQC, “with so many states having passed effective privacy legislation in years past, policymakers are now building on those foundational policies to consider more aspects of data use.” Click to learn more about state legislation intended to address inequities and empower the public with more information.

Educators for Excellence-Connecticut recently celebrated teachers’ wins in the legislative session, including bills that will enable the legislature to consider how potential laws would impact racial equity, and remove barriers to creating and diverse and talented teacher pipeline. Read more here.

In Minnesota, EdAllies expressed disappointment over the final days of the legislative session, explaining that an omnibus bill’s key provisions to advance educational justice were vetoed. These provisions included commonsense improvements to the administration of state assessments, and a requirement that schools report and the state capture data on non-exclusionary discipline practices used before student exclusions or expulsions. In this update from the Foundation for Excellence in Education, Alex Kelly shares details on 2018 wins for student-centered policies in states across the nation, including workforce education innovations and big gains for early literacy. Read more here.
