Position Responsibilities

Reporting to the PIE Network Board of Directors, the Executive Director will have overall strategic and operational responsibility supporting the Network. The new leader will be responsible for managing the Network’s staff in the creation of opportunities and events that support networking and collaboration, spread resources, know-how and best practices, and support key objectives of Network members working toward common goals. Specifically, the Executive Director will:

Leadership & Management

  • Set goals for understanding and anticipating goals and priorities across the Network, informed by annual surveys and regular “listening tours” with Network members and guidance for the team and board
  • Lead efforts that connect the Network and promote the work of its members to advance reform, including events and communications both physical and virtual
  • Ensure effective evaluation tools are in place to track results of the PIE Network’s engagement efforts
  • Actively engage the lead executives of Network members in opportunities for collective problem solving and anticipating opportunities that strengthen member organizations
  • Lead, coach, develop, and retain a high-performance team to support the Network


  • Engage the board as thought partners and stewards of the Network’s resources through effective board meetings and an efficient committee structure as needed to guide and sustain the Network
  • Working with the board, ensure that trust and commitment are built across the Network, and that regular opportunities to begin and continue membership are available
  • Anticipate board transitions and sustain strong pipeline of board and committee members eager and able to serve the organization

Revenue and fiscal stewardship

  • Build and sustain confidence of existing funding partners and expand funding partnerships as needed to support new priorities and sustain Network growth, and sustain funder confidence with regular updates and timely reporting
  • Ensure an effective process for engaging the board in setting goals and priorities for the Network, establishing the annual budget to execute those plans, and regularly evaluating outcomes, reporting those back to the board, funders, and other constituents

Strategic positioning

  • Act as the ambassador in building and deepening relationships with current and potential national partners and members
  • Ensure that regular communications demonstrate the value of the network, prove the power of advocacy, and that Network resources and opportunities are broadly promoted
  • Spotlight leading advocacy campaigns across the country, partnering with the Network team to develop messaging strategy for the organization

Profile of the Successful Candidate

The successful candidate will have an innate understanding of – and feel for – the power of networks. Knowledge of the important role and leverage potential of networks in social change will be essential. Specifically, the successful candidate will:

  • Believe in the promise of public education and be committed to doing all s/he can to ensure schools deliver on that promise
  • Be a pragmatic, solutions oriented leader who believes that great solutions can emerge from anywhere across the ideological spectrum
  • Have extensive experience leading advocacy campaigns or similar experience advancing and implementing education policy at the state level and want to use that experience to build the movement for education reform
  • Identify and support alignment of interests as well as appreciating the differences among them
  • Delight in connecting experts and leaders on a wide variety of issues

More specifically, PIE Network seeks a professional who has:

  • Direct experience leading advocacy campaigns working at the state level
  • A reputation as a person with a high degree of relational integrity and a thoroughly optimistic belief in the capacity of advocacy organizations to change political will in their state capitals
  • Pragmatism and a strong commitment to cross-ideological pursuit of solutions, staying focused on what works
  • Insatiable, infectious curiosity about “what works” to advance changes in public policy and advocacy, including policy innovations and campaign strategy
  • A seasoned blend of judgment, wisdom, and discretion in managing relationships among diverse Network members and partners
  • Skills to build a strong team, with a focus on the team’s cultivation and stewardship of Network relationships
  • Strong fundraising experience, with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships
  • Experience in leading and facilitating working meetings and events • Ability to travel as needed to serve the Network

The selected candidate will also likely have:

  • Five or more years leadership experience with progressive responsibilities
  • An advanced degree in a field related to education policy
  • Direct experience in policy making and political campaigning
