League of Education Voters Keeps Community Engaged on Funding Reform
August 9, 2018

As many advocates know, implementation work after a bill passes can be just as important as the advocacy work before.

In Washington state, implementation and advocacy are two sides of the same coin when it comes to school finance. After massive changes and investments to the state’s funding system, the League of Education Voters (LEV) is continuing to push for more equitable funding by tracking the impact of recent reforms and producing valuable resources to guide future decisions.

Even though many advocates and legislators agreed the funding system could still be improved, there was little appetite to take on the issue again in 2018. With their eyes set on future legislative sessions, LEV has started producing resources on the impact of the reforms to keep the community, coalition members, and the legislature informed and aware. LEV produced a brief to thoroughly explain how teacher salaries have been and will be impacted by the reforms. Additionally, LEV created a series of interactive maps to demonstrate the intersection of demographics and funding equity in the state. These resources allow LEV to monitor implementation and make the case for the need for continued reform.
