Considerations & Lessons for Building Change-Leading Organizations

Too often, the process of setting policy for education is so politicized that the “public” is completely shut out of discussions affecting public schools. Policymakers feel tremendous pressure from every interest group except the one that should matter most: students, their families, and their communities. However, in more than half the states across the country, organizations of leading citizens have recognized that public education is critically important to the vitality of their states and to improve it, they need to engage in the politics of education reform. They have created organizations that bring a credible, professional, and constant advocacy voice to state law-making processes. In doing so, they are effectively shifting the balance of power in favor of the public’s interest. Often, they are winning.

Rabbles Rousers is a resource manual for those working to build such organizations. It includes:

  • “Big Considerations” for advocacy startups;
  • “Nuts and Bolts” of creating advocacy organizations; and
  • A“Top Ten” list of recommendations to create a change-leading organization.
